What Type of Sounds Should We Use?

As we sat down to plan out our film, one of the first things we discussed was the diegetic sounds we wanted to use to create the desired atmosphere. We knew that we wanted the sound design to be a key component of our film, helping to immerse the audience in the world we were creating. One of the first sounds we decided to include was the sound of rain. We wanted to create a sense of melancholy and sadness, and the sound of rain falling on a tin roof was the perfect way to do that. We also decided to use the sound of wind to create a feeling of isolation and desolation. The sound of the wind howling through an abandoned building would help to convey the sense of emptiness we wanted to portray. To add tension and suspense to a particular scene, we chose to use the sound of foapproaching slowly from a distance, gradually getting closer and closer. We also wanted to use the sound of a ticking clock to create a sense of urgency in certain scenes, particularly those where the protagonist was running out of time. For a scene taking place in a busy city street, we decided to use the sounds of car horns, sirens, and chatter to create a feeling of chaos and confusion. To convey the emotions of the characters, we decided to use the sound of their breathing and heartbeats. This would help the audience connect with the characters and feel their anxiety or fear. We also incorporated the sounds of birds chirping and water flowing to create a sense of tranquility in a scene taking place in a park. For a scene set in a busy restaurant, we decided to use the sounds of plates clattering, glasses clinking, and people talking loudly to create a sense of excitement and energy. To add an element of horror to a particular scene, we chose to use the sound of a baby crying, but with a distorted and eerie effect. We also used the sound of a phone ringing to create suspense, especially when the protagonist was waiting for an important call. For a scene taking place in a forest, we decided to use the sounds of birds, insects, and rustling leaves to create a sense of serenity and beauty. We also incorporated the sound of a gunshot to create shock and drama in a pivotal scene. For a scene set in the house, we decided to use the sounds of a static tv and echoing voices to create a dreamy and surreal atmosphere. To add a sense of danger and unease, we chose to use the sound of a dog barking aggressively. Overall, we were very intentional with the diegetic sounds we chose, using them to enhance the emotions and atmosphere of each scene.
